Homework | Stage 4

Yesterday they replaced our back door. I loved the old style of the back door, but it was old- drafty, rickety, loud, falling off hinges and not to mention crooked- seemed like something out of a Tim Burton movie- a good 1" shorter on one side (?). Also, it was hardly secure- could've leaned on it a little- or simply broke a pane of that thin glass and *snap* you'd be in our house. Not so nice.

This new door- more light, solid, quiet, energy efficient and safer glass. Also got some sharp new hardware. It will be painted a deep red outside and white on the inside.

It's obvious now, I have to replace that old light fixture, which by my guesstimate, was replaced when they did the aluminum siding sometime in the 70's/early 80's.

The light in the kitchen is glorious! And now I can see all the flaws, marks and scrapes in the wall paint, so it looks like a day of retouching is in order.

Lol! It never ends -- once you touch up the paint, you'll realize you have to change the curtains ... then the tablecloth ... then the dishes... :)

It looks great, but I did like the old one too. What will you do with it?

Nice! We have an old door that needs replacing too for someof the same reasons you listed but I haven't want to get rid of it.

Ok...now get really creative and find a good upcycled use for that old back door ;-)

For those concerned about the continued life of the old door, we're putting it on Freecycle, so I'm sure it will go to another home. I would've reused it myself on the garage, but it was too narrow.

I like your new door very much. It's great that it is in keeping with the style of the old one. I have a hard time saying goodbye to my vintage house pieces, but with some thought and consideration for the older style, I have been happy with my replacements. It's great to have a house that's not so drafty and noisy!

I wonder if you will tell me where you got your door from and what model it is? I have been looking for a back door to replace our awful drafty one and that one is just exactly what I would want. BTW, your house is looking beautiful. Such inspiring renovations!!!

Karin- it's a Simpson door, #7212 from the Bungalow collection.
